Typing a six-digit PIN to pay ₹20 for chai gets old fast. UPI Lite fixes that. It is a small wallet inside your UPI app that pays small amounts without asking for the PIN every time.
How UPI Lite works
You move some money from your bank account into UPI Lite once, using your UPI PIN. After that, small payments come out of this balance with a single tap. NPCI, the body that runs UPI, launched it in 2022 so that small payments go through faster and put less load on bank servers.
UPI Lite vs normal UPI
| Normal UPI | UPI Lite | |
|---|---|---|
| PIN for every payment | Yes | No, only when you add money |
| Money comes from | Your bank account | The UPI Lite balance |
| Good for | Any amount | Small daily payments |
| Bank statement | Shows every payment | Shows only the money you add |
There is a limit on each UPI Lite payment and on the balance you can keep in it. These limits have been raised a few times since launch, so check the current numbers in the UPI Lite section of your app.
How to turn it on
BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm all support UPI Lite, and the steps are about the same everywhere:
- Open the app and find UPI Lite, usually on the home screen or in your profile.
- Pick the bank account to use.
- Enter an amount and confirm with your UPI PIN.
From then on, payments within the limit go through UPI Lite on their own. Some apps can also top it up automatically when the balance gets low. Look for auto top-up in the UPI Lite settings.
When it is useful
- Tea, snacks, auto rides and parking
- Shops with a weak mobile network
- When you don't want fifty tiny entries in your bank statement every month
Bigger payments still use normal UPI with your PIN.
Is it safe?
Only a small amount sits in UPI Lite, so even in the worst case the risk is limited. Keep a screen lock on your phone. If the phone is lost, contact your UPI app or bank to disable UPI Lite. And never share your UPI PIN or an OTP with anyone who calls you, whatever they claim to be.
